Vredeburg

Looking for european touch in Jogja? I wrote about Taman Sari the Water Castle that directed by a Portugues, but now you'll get another european touch. Exactly it's dutch touch. Yes, it's Vredeburg! It's a fortress built by the Dutch East Indies government to cover the residence of Jogjakarta that lied just in front of it.

Vredeburg is located near the sultan palace/kraton. Even a canon was ready to be shoot inside kraton at every time. Dutch totally predominate Jogja de jure, but de facto they should 'fight' hard to kraton and sultan to get Jogjanese's sympathy. Remember that at the time Jogja was a free sultanat/kingdom before VOC was coming. Basically, Jogjanese believed that sultan is the God's representative on the earth, so they would never cheated Sultan. Javanese is the most loyalist in the world. You'll never heard any rebellion record in Javanese history except a internal conflict.

The fortress is now still have a complete structure just as it was. Jogja provincial government used it as a museum with some dioramas, pictures and documents related to the Jogja history. It's the most visited place in town after kraton and malioboro. Visitor could easily walking around the building to see how the Dutch East Indies' troops lived there.

Buy a Bird at Ngasem

Javanese people had three indicators to point someone: horse as the ride, 'keris' as the weapon, and bird. Yes, bird was one of the criteria of the middle-high community. More birds he had, more pride he get. Just like a luxury car that divided the super-billionaires to billionaires.

As a central of Javanese culture, Jogja has many bird markets and the biggest one named Ngasem. It's the oldest bird in Jogja, operated since 1809 or almost 200 years. Located 400 meters at the west side of Kraton (sultan palace) and just a step from the Water Castle 'Taman Sari', this traditional market actually is a pets market. But, since 1960 when bird pitches had moved from Beringharjo market to Ngasem, this market is dominated by birds. So, peoples calls it as 'bird market' even customer will also find cats, fishes, iguanas or snakes.

The popular bird here is 'perkutut'. This kind of bird was a favorite of marquises and gentries because of its nice 'voices'. Then 'kutilang', 'kepodang', 'emprit', 'prenjak', 'jalak', and 'parkit'. We can also find some owls that salable for Rp 35.000,-. The most expensive collection maybe the javanese eagle which sold at Rp. 350.000,- each. Want a bird? Just come to Ngasem, Jogja.

The Splendid Prambanan

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temples in south-east Asia, located approximately 18 km east of Jogja city. It is characterised by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture and by the 47m high central building inside a large complex of individual temples. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was built around 850 by either Rakai Pikatan, king of the second Hinduism Mataram dynasty, or Dyah Balitung Maha Sambu, during the Sanjaya Dynasty. When Merapi erupted, the temple was abandoned and began to deteriorate. Reconstruction of the compound began in 1918. The main building was completed in around 1953. Much of the original stonework has been stolen and reused at remote construction sites.

The temple was damaged during the earthquake in Java in May 26, 2006. Early photos suggest that although the complex appears to be structurally intact, damage is significant. Large pieces of debris, including carvings, were scattered over the ground. The temple has been closed to the public until damage can be fully assessed. The head of Yogyakarta Archaeological Conservation Agency stated that: "it will take months to identify the precise damage". However, some weeks later in 2006 the site re-opened for visitors. The immediate surroundings of the Hindu temples remain off-limits for safety reasons.

Prambanan also called the temple of Roro Jonggrang (slender virgin), after a Javanese princess, daughter of King Boko. She was forced to marry a man she did not love, Bandung Bondowoso. After long negotiations she eventually agreed to the marriage, under the condition that her prince should build her a temple ornamented with 1000 statues, between the setting and the rising of the sun.

Helped by supernatural beings, the prince was about to succeed. So the princess ordered the women of the village to set a fire in the east of the temple, attempting to make the prince believe that the sun was about to rise. As the cocks began to crow, fooled by the light, the supernatural helpers fled. The prince, furious about the simple trick, changed Roro Jongrang to stone. She became the last and the most beautiful of the thousand statues that now can be found at the north room of the main temple.

Jogja's Castle of Taman Sari

Another beautiful place to visit in Jogja is Taman Sari. Foreign visitors names this place as ‘Perfume Garden’ or ‘Fragnant Garden’ while Government of Jogja gives another name based on its history, the Water Castle. This exciting garden located about 2 kilometers in the south-west Kraton (Sultan Palace), just beside the well-known bird market named Ngasem.

Taman Sari was a recreation and relaxation place for Sultan of Jogjakarta, where he could swim together with his wives in a private pool than had sex with one of them. Sultan also did a meditation in a secret room inside this area once every year. Some peoples believes there was a tunnel directly to the Indonesian Ocean--about 30 kilometers in the south of the castle, which used by Sultan to meet his supernatural wife, the prettiest woman called Nyi Roro Kidul who live below the ocean. This garden was also functioned as ‘batik center’ where Sultan’s wives and daughters spent their times making ‘batik’ and a camouflage area in war situation as well.

The Taman Sari development ordered by Prince Mangkubumi as the first Sultan of Jogjakarta. The works started at 1758, 3 years after the Giyanti Agreement that divided the big Mataram Kingdom into two little sultanats; Jogjakarta and Surakarta (Solo). Its architecture is quietly a mix of various cultures and styles, such as Islam, Hindu, Buddha, Javanese, Chinese and also European. No wonder we could find the European style because the architect was a Portuguese, but no documentation tell his name except the royal title of Demang Tegis.

There are two main gates to get inside this place. Gapuro Agung is the west gate and now permanently blocked to separate this garden to a crowd village beside it. The east gate is Gapuro Panggung where visitor can enter the area. These gates are carved in Javanese motifs such as birds, plants and flowers. Another carve could be found at the middle gate between the pool and the batik center.

The Sekaten Fest

As an Islamic empire, Kraton or Sultanat of Jogjakarta annually held a ceremony to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed. The prophet was born at 12th Robi' al-Awwal on Islamic lunar calendar named Hijriah. So, the day of ceremony is based on the Hijriah calendar.

This ceremony called as Grebeg Mulud and popularly known as Sekaten. Both name are heavily influenced by Arabic language, where Mulud (originally Maulud) means 'birthday' and Sekaten basicly is an Arabic word: 'syahadatain'. 'Syahadatain' is a plural mode for 'syahadat' that means 'the words of confession'. In Arabic grammar, plural is simply made by adding 'ain' in the end of the word. A moslem has to believe that Allah is the only Mighty God and Mohammed is the Messenger sent by Allah. Those believes must be said in the words of confession named 'syahadat'.

Fourty days before the ceremony, Kraton square would be crowd where many shows, games and bazaars entertains people during the Pasar Malam Sekaten Festival. And two days before the day-D of the Sekaten, large ceremonial food mounds are painstakingly prepared at the royal palace during the Tumplak Wajik festival.

The Sekaten procession starts from Kraton where these mounds (that called as 'gunungan') are marched by some 'abdi dalem' (royal employees) and guarded by royal soldiers to the main mosque to get blessed and finally distributed to the waiting people. Jogjanese people believes that a piece of the 'gunungan' or food mound could ensure their good fortune and eternal youth as well as guarantee good harvests. These peoples come from all around Jogja, even from outside Jogja such as Magelang, Purworejo, Klaten in Central Java. To get the best place where they could easily reach the 'gunungan' these peoples would come early and sleep in the mosque at the night before the ceremony.

It's an exciting ceremony, so don't miss it! But, be careful. Secure your wallet or jewelry first before joining the peoples because pick-pockets really likes such a crowd like this.

The 'Nasi Kucing' Meals

There is a unique popular menu in Jogja; nasi kucing (pronounced as 'nasee kuching'). 'Nasi' means 'rice' and 'kucing' means cat. But wait, it's not a menu for cats nor a menu containing cat meal. It's called 'nasi kucing' because of its serving method. A little rice with some peppered fried 'tempe' packed in a very small banana leafs container make this menu get the name because its portion is similar to a cat menu. Anyway, this kind of food is a favorite menu for mostly students because of its cheap low price.

How to find the 'nasi kucing'? Well, this food can be easily found at many food court named 'warung angkringan' in the whole places of the city. 'Warung' means 'store' or 'shop' and 'angkringan' means the place when you sit on the high wooden long chair so your legs will 'hang' down the earth. This kind of sitting called 'nangkring' in Javanese. 'Warung angkringan' is another Jogjanese uniques, and it's original. You'll never find these 'warung angkringan' in another city in Indonesia, except Solo or Surakarta.

A Hierarchical Language

Jogjanese people is a part of Javanese population and culture. as a great ethnic, Java has many diversities of dialect and custom. Jogjanese dialect is known as the most cultured Javanese language, while the Javanese people of eastern Java speaks the less one. But, Javanese language in all dialects has a hierarchy of speech that make it looks so complicated.

Imagine a language so complex that to say the word 'to say', one has (at least) five choices: ngomong, kondho, sanjang, matur, ngendhiko. The word used depends on the 'level' of speech chosen. And the level depends on who is speaking to whom, their relative ages and status, the situation, the sex, generation and the race of the speaker and so on.

The three levels of speech are Ngoko, Madyo and Kromo, and each has different words for everyday things. Ngoko is the first language a child learns. It's simple, unrefined, familiar and used between close friends. The highest level is Kromo, an elegant and polite speech used in formal situations. In between the familiar and the formal is Madyo speech, used when people of low status talk or when two close friends speak respectfully. In addition there is low Kromo and high kromo to indicate the status of the speakers, and other levels of speech used only for royalty and ritual feasts.

This complex hierarchical language has been heavily influenced by the Hinduism caste system, where everyone has and must be addressed according to a certain rank. To use the wrong word would be insulting and to operate on the wrong level disastrous--no wonder the Javanese find it easier to speak in Bahasa Indonesia that rated as one of the simplest languages in the world.

How to say 'You' in Javanese?
--Ngoko : kowe or awakmu
--Madyo : sampeyan
--Kromo : panjenengan

How to say 'thank you' in Javanese?
By ignoring the relative ages and status, the situation, the sex, generation, the race and so on, Javanese will say the same phrase to say 'thank you', that is 'matur nuwun' or 'matur nembah nuwun'. It's a polite expression to show an honesty respect to other's help or service.

The Healthy Jamu

Traditional herbal remedies, collectively called jamu, as a part of Javanese tradition are very popular with Jogjanese. These pastes, powders, creams or capsules are consumed daily and used to cure everything from headaches and fatigue to leprosy and flabby tummies.

This fascinating 'nature cure' originated in the royal courts of Jogjakarta (Keraton), and also Surakarta (Solo). Here, the ladies of the nobility spent their time discovering and perfecting the science of using roots, flowers, barks, nuts, herbs and spices to retain their beauty and vigor.

'Mbok jamu' is a term for the women selling jamu. 'Mbok' means 'old woman' or 'madam', but many young girls who sell jamu also called as 'mbok jamu'. Mbok jamu brings her products, with a unique bamboo hand-made container named 'bakul', on her back strong fasten by a long stole or shawl (locally known as 'selendang' or 'jarik') worn over her shoulder.

Walking along the crowded streets or visiting public spaces like traditional market are the common method to market jamu. Interested buyers will stop mbok jamu to buy whatever they need. People who want more comfortable place to consume it could go to jamu stores that can be found at the city corners. Anyway, jamu stores doesn't serve traditional jamu, but modern packed jamu made by commercial manufactures.

Yes, today the ancient ancestral recipes of jamu are used to commercially manufacture an endless variety of modern jamu to sell to convinced customers.

Merapi the Fires

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi in Indonesian language, is a conical volcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. Its name means Mountain of Fire. It is very close to the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1700 m above sea level.

Several of its eruptions have caused fatalities. It was erupting from 1992 to 2002, and a particularly large explosion killed 43 people in 1994. It began erupting again in 2006, and scientists believe a large eruption is imminent. In light of the hazards it poses to populated areas, it has been designated a Decade Volcano.

Merapi is the youngest in a group of volcanoes in southern Java.It is situated at a subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian Plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate. It is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, part of the Pacific Ring of crap - a section of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and South East Asia. Stratigraphic analysis reveals that many people were killed, and from then until about 10,000 years ago, eruptions were typically effusive, and the outflowing lava emitted was basaltic. Since then, eruptions have become more explosive, with viscous andesitic lavas often generating lava domes. Dome collapse has often generated pyroclastic flows, and larger explosions, which have resulted in eruption columns, have also generated pyroclastic flows through column collapse.

Typically, small eruptions occur every two to three years, and larger ones every 10-15 years or so. Notable eruptions, often causing many deaths, have occurred in 1006, 1786, 1822, 1872 (the most violent eruption in recent history), and 1930—when thirteen villages were destroyed and 1400 people killed by pyroclastic flows.

A very large eruption in 1006 is claimed to have covered all of central Java with ash. The volcanic devastation is claimed to have led to the collapse of the Hindu Kingdom of Mataram, however there is insufficient evidence from that era for this to be substantiated.

Merapi continues hold particular significance for the Javanese: it is one of four places where officials from the royal palaces of Yogyakarta and Solo make annual offerings to placate the ancient Javanese spirits.

Jogja Overview

Jogjakarta is one of the Republic of Indonesia's provinces that located at the midle southern Java island. Its formal name is Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Daerah Istimewa is a special status given by the Government of Indonesia at least for 2 reasons. First, Jogja was an independent sultanat (kingdom/emperor) that voluntary joined the Republic of Indonesia just couple days after the independence proclamation. Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX as the former Sultan (=king) of Jogja declared his authority as a part of the new Republic.

Second, as a province Jogja has a unique government system. To acknowledge the existence of Jogjakarta Sultanat, Sultan will automatically be elected as the governor of the province. No public election like another place, the governor position is always on Sultan hand. Some the democrats tried to change the system. They campaigned that governor public election is a must. But before the movement could change any system or rule, Sultan Hamengku Buwono X put his power down and let Jogjanese elect their new governor in 2008.

Jogja is 3,186 km2 and divided into 5 kabupatens (=district); Jogja City, Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo and Gunung Kidul. This well-known province has many beautifull places as the second tourism destination of Indonesia after Bali. Prambanan Temple is one of its famous objects, beside the most active volcano named Merapi. For culinary lover, Jogja has gudeg, bakpia, yangko or krecek to satisfy your appetite.

The second in tourism, but Jogja is number in educational destination. It's titled as Students City where students all around Indonesia come to study at many choices of university in this city. Jogja has 2 state university; Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and Yogyakarta State University (UNY) plus more than hundred of private universities. The Tasty Gudeg

Gudeg is a traditional food from Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia which is made from young Nangka (jack fruit) among other things, boiled for several hours with palm sugar and some spices, thus it tastes sweet. It is also called Green Jack Fruit Sweet Stew.

Gudeg sold by women along Malioboro Street at midnite till dawn. Here, gudeg serve in a 'warung lesehan'. 'Warung' means mini traditional restaurant, and 'lesehan' is a term to say people sitting without any chair; sitting on the ground or floor covered by 'tikar' (tatami in Japanese).

The most popular place known as gudeg center is Kampung Wijilan. Along the Street Wijilan we could see many 'warung' with big letters "GUDEG WIJILAN ASLI JOGJA". What about its taste? Well, Jogjanese food well known with its little bit sweet taste. So, if have a problem with diabetes, just try it very little bit. Mangez un peutit peu... Bon appetit!

The Unforgettable Malioboro

Jalan Malioboro (Malioboro Street) is a major shopping street in Yogyakarta, Indonesia; the name is also used more generally for the neighborhood around the street. It runs north from the Yogyakarta kraton (palace) towards the roads that lead to either Surakarta to the east, or Magelang to the north, as well as Mount Merapi. This is in itself is significant to many of the local population, the north south orientation between the palace and the volcano being of importance.

The street is the centre of Yogyakarta's largest tourist district; many hotels and restaurants are located nearby. Sidewalks on both sides of the street are crowded with small stalls selling a variety of goods. In the evening several open-air streetside restaurants, called lesehan, operate along the street.

Less obvious to the tourist, but more for the local population, side streets, lanes and structures that lead on to Malioboro are as important as the street itself.

The street was for many years two-way, but by the 1980s had become one way only, from the railway line (where it starts) to the south - to Beringharjo markets, where it ends. The largest, oldest Dutch era hotel, Hotel Garuda, is located on the street's northern end, on the eastern side adjacent to the railway line. It has the former Dutch era Prime Minister's complex, the kepatihan, on the eastern side.

For many years in the 1980s and later, a cigarette advertisement was placed on the first building south of the railway line - or effectively the last building on Malioboro, which advertised Marlboro cigarettes, no doubt appealing to locals and foreigners who would see a pun with name of the street with a foreign product being advertised.

It does not reach the walls or grounds of the Yogyakarta palace, as Malioboro ceases in name adjacent to the very large market Beringharjo (on the eastern side as well). From this point the street changes name and has on the western side the former Governors residence, and on the eastern side the old Dutch Fort Vredenburg.

Malioboro Street can be found before we go to the Great Sultan's Palace-Keraton. The road from Tugu train station in the north and runs straight down to the Karaton at the south end, it is the most attractive road of the city, which is always busy days and nights.

A long the street we can find many of handycraft are sold. We can get it with a cheap prizes. There is so many shop from traditional shops until mal and department store.

At night we can enjoy many food like gudeg (unique food of Yogyakarta) or another food. We can eat that food in lesehan restaurant. There is no chair there, so we eat that food with sit on the carpet at the side of Malioboro Street.

We can also enjoy the performance of public road singer while we eat at lesehan restaurant. Or maybe we can ordering a street drawer to draw our face in canvas.

We can see many andong (cart pulled by horses) and becak(cart driving by man) parking there. We can order that traditional public transportation to go around of Yogyakarta.
